Attempting to obey God and follow Jesus Christ our Lord

Noorjahan–Light of the World– Update from Pastor Kerry Mauldin

 Update from Pastor Kerry Mauldin
We start to walk into the village…”It is a long walk” they said.  Next thing,  4 men pounding drums in unison make a line in front of us and we begin to follow these 4 bare footed leaders who announce our coming.  People begin to crowd around us from the simple houses.  They are touching us and shaking hands and welcoming…
We walk all thru town to where chairs are set under a tarp.  About 140 people gather and we share the HOPE that we have.
This reminds me of the donkey that came into the barn at the end of the day and shares with all the animals.  “You wont believe the day I had…  I picked up a hitch hiker on the road, he related.  As I walked along, people began to come and put palm branches down and even their clothes so I would not soil my hooves.
They began to welcome me and Greet me in the name of the Lord.
Amazing, you won’t believe, but they even said, “Lets make him our king!!!”
Best day I have ever had!!!

Fearful Flight

Both doors into the house locked, a suitcase hastily thrown onto the couch, I raced down the hall to gather clothes while I struggled to gather my thoughts. My heart pounded. If I was caught, the scene would get ugly in a hurry.

What lay before us, I had no clue. All I knew was that we had to get somewhere safe.

My children were with my mom, who waited for my call. She originally said that she wanted no part of this operation. “He will hurt us, Tami,” she’d stated, eyes wide with fear.

“Fine. Then you need to know that this morning your grandchildren and I will be on the highway. We will hitchhike if we have to. Mom, we have to get out of here! They are expecting us at the Women’s Refuge at 10 a.m.”

The guilt did the trick, and she relented.

Fighting back tears, nearly overwhelmed, I ran to the boys’ room, yanked open the dresser, and began grabbing clothes. I took the armload and hurried to the living room and dumped them into the awaiting luggage.

Next was the girls’ room. I searched for a stuffed toy for each of them as well. They would need all the comfort they could get.

Back in the living room, I turned, ready to get some things for myself when

– for the first time in my life

– I heard the Lord speak.

“Go get your Bible; the one your mother bought you for Christmas.”

You’ve got to be kidding. I’ve got to get out of here!

I started down the hall when, in my mind, heard the voice again, “Go get your Bible – your One Year Bible.”

I don’t have time for this. Besides, I don’t even know where it is.

“It’s in the girls’ closet, up on the shelf, in the bottom box. Go get it!!”

His voice was insistent – not the, “Hey, this might be a good idea,” sort, but rather the “NOW!” tone a parent uses with a child who’s had it.

I charged back to the girls’ room, opened the closet and took down the boxes. I opened the bottom one as I had been told. There, right on top, was the Bible I was supposed to bring with us.

Wow! This is weird.

On my way down the hall, I heard, “Open it. Read it.”

I stopped, and opened the book up to that date’s reading. Here is what I read:

“The Lord, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel says, ‘I am the Lord your God, who punishes you for your own good and leads you along the paths that you should follow.

Oh, that you had listened to My laws! Then you would have had peace flowing like a gentle river, and great waves of righteousness…there would have been no need for your destruction.

Yet even now, be free from your captivity! Leave Babylon, singing as you go; shout to the ends of the earth that the Lord has redeemed his servants.’ “

I crumpled to a heap and sobbed. After a few minutes, I calmly got up, finished packing, and called for my mom to pick me up.

[The above passage is from Isaiah 48 (supposedly “useless” because it is written to the Jews – and in the Old Testament, according to my childhood pastors), and from The Living Bible – a “heretic’s” version. The Lord didn’t seem to care about either of these issues! In later years, this recollection put to rest the “Battle of the Versions” for me. If God is okay with the Living Bible, who am I to question Him?]

For the next several months, that little Bible became like my diary, only written in advance. Each morning, what I read gave me a heads-up for the day. I was amazed at how specific and relevant the Scriptures were. After all, the scenery may have changed, but God does not. His ways are consistent throughout all the ages.

That was the beginning of “hearing” God, both through my thoughts and through His Word. These are His two favorite ways of communicating with me.

How does He speak to you? I’d love to hear your stories!

Our God is an awesome God. To Him be all glory, honor, and praise.

{Note:  if you are in an abusive relationship, you need to know that this is not God’s will for your life. In fact, the “law of the land” states that abuse is illegal. By staying, you are in violation of the law – as much as the abuser, for you aid and abet their lawless deeds. Seek the Lord’s guidance. He will deliver you!

And, if you know someone who’s in an abusive relationship, please don’t ridicule them or treat them with disdain. Without being in a situation like this, there is no way to describe the fear and worthlessness that person feels. Putting them down won’t help. On average it takes seven times before a woman leaves and stays gone. We were no exception, and were reunited within a few months. Thankfully, the Lord completely and gloriously delivered us from this nightmare a little over a year later.}

Do You Want This?

Jesus asked the strangest question to the man who’d had an infirmity for 38 years. The answer seemed like a no-brainer, yet Jesus asked anyway. It was this:

“Do you want to be made well?”

Seriously, Jesus? The guy’s been coming to this “clinic” every day, hoping that today will be different; that the odds will be in his favor and he will be healed. Why on earth wouldn’t he want to be made well?

After I thought about the question for a while, and wondered why Jesus would ask the man to state the obvious, it suddenly became clear that the answer is not as straightforward as one might suppose.

Consider this: for 38 years, this man was released from responsibility. He was unable to carry on a normal life, and had a good reason why. After all, he was infirm. Others had to financially support him. He got attention and pity from those around him.

We are not told the exact nature of his illness, which is good. If we knew what ailed him, we might assume that this is true only for people with his particular problem. Instead it’s left open-ended, giving it greater application. (God is so smart – I am continually amazed!)

This is not as foolish a question as we might think, though. Here are some examples:

Physical Healing:

One day we had a gathering of people at our home. During the course of the day, one of the people in attendance dislocated his hip. He was in excruciating pain. It was not a new injury, but rather something that happened as a result of an ongoing problem.

Also in attendance were two well-meaning students of the “all power has been given to us” persuasion. You could sense them telegraphing to one another, Here’s our chance! I shuddered at what was coming next.

They did not ask the question Jesus asked.

I knew this particular person, and knew that while he lived in continual pain and would like to be rid of it, he also liked his current lifestyle – no job, no responsibilities, lots of drugs to make him feel better – and an excuse to abuse alcohol to help him “cope.” His honest answer to the question would have been, “No.”

Armed with the authority of Jesus, the two went to this fellow, asked if they could pray for him, then took him by his arms and yanked him to his feet – commanding him to stand “in Jesus’ name.” (I’ve been healed several times from various injuries and illness, by the way. I believe – and have experienced – physical healing. That is not my point!)

He cried out in pain and wilted back to the floor. The two would-be “healers” retired to another room, trying to figure out what had gone wrong.

You didn’t ask the question.

It’s important to know the answer.

Mental Freedom:

This was a very good lesson to me. At the time I was asking Jesus for inner healing.

I began to question the Lord as to why He had refused to act on my request. His response was very candid, “You don’t really want Me to heal this for you.”

“Are you kidding, Lord? Of course I want to be made well.”

He began to show me the things that would be affected if I allowed Him to heal me:

The migraines I suffered from would disappear (That would be good!) – along with the “right” to shut myself away from everyone while I recovered. Oh! Hmm.

I would no longer have an excuse for my bad behavior.

I would have to take responsibility for my actions.

I would not have others’ tender care, attention, and pity for my sorry state.

Relief from Tormentors:

He went on to show me why he hadn’t answered  my request to “straighten out” certain of my family members either, and showed me that I secretly enjoyed the “perks” of their bad behavior:

I had a good excuse for my depression and rage. Look what they are doing to me!

I had a “right” – no the responsibility – to expose their bad behavior to others – Please pray for so-and-so. This is what they are doing (lots of unnecessary details given). I was horrified when I discovered that God calls this “gossip”…and hates it. (While I know there is nothing wrong with a prayer partner – the whole world is not my prayer partner!)

I got pity and compassion from others – a lot of attention. Oh, you poor thing. I don’t know how you are able to stand all you go through. You’re such a godly woman. God must keep you so close to His heart for you to be able to bear up under this their ill treatment of you. You’re amazing.

By comparison, they made me look good!

It wasn’t difficult for people to see me as the saint! The other person’s sin was hanging out there where everyone could see it. Mine was not so obvious. I could control my tongue in public. No one was privy to the criticism, judgment, and condemnation I heaped on my “tormentors.” My manipulative skills were so finely honed that few were aware they were being coerced into doing what I wanted. My requests for “prayer” seemed so sincere.

The Lord said, “If I ‘fixed’ them, your own bad behavior would stick out like a sore thumb. Others would see that your family members are only a tiny bit of the problem. The greater issue is your own sinfulness. You have a divided heart. Part of you wants to be released from what hurts, the other part likes having the ‘right’ to sin.”

Well! That was certainly more information than I’d bargained for!

But He was right.

At that point, I had to ask myself some questions. Did I really want healing for myself and for my family? Was I willing to change – to take responsibility for my own life? To become a victor instead of a victim?

Things got bad enough, and my coping mechanisms ceased to be effective. The choice was simple: change or die.

But…God made it clear that to take my own life was not an option. “There is a time appointed for you to come home. I will bring you when that day arrives; you will not get here a moment before. Now, what kind of shape you’ll be in until then…well, I’ll leave that up to you.” (Visions of sitting in a wheelchair with spittle running down my chin came to mind. Oh! I’d never considered that a suicide attempt might fail.) That door closed permanently, never to become an option again!

I counted the cost involved. I would have to give up the “perks.” Could I do this? I realized that no matter what, I had to change. I knew that the Lord had a great deal of work to do in me; and I surrendered my heart to Him.

I’m so glad I did, for that day I became His workmanship. The Greek word is “poema.” Since most of us are word crafters, we can appreciate what that means…every word carefully selected to express what He wants to say to others through our lives. Mmm. Beautiful!

It was a process, and not without accompanying agony, I won’t lie.

But the healing Jesus continues to bring, although painful for the moment, is being completed. He cut me to the quick in some areas – but it’s also the last time I felt misery in the broken places. Some horrible memories were revisited, the anguish intense – and then extinguished forever.

Jesus began to transform me…long before He began work on my “problem” people.

It turns out that they were not the problem. I was.

What about you? Do you really want to be made well? For some it is instantaneous; for others (like me) it is a process that takes time. Few of us arrived at the state we’re currently in overnight. Thought patterns will have to change, relationships will change. Life will never be the same. Peacelovejoy, these can be yours to enjoy…the real deal, nothing out of a bottle of any kind!

With all your heart do you want to be made well?

A Letter from Annie Nowlin

For those of you who don’t know Annie, she is a great friend who also has a blog called Lupus Chronicles and has Lupus herself. She is a former RN who had to leave the job she loved because of the disabling condition of the disease. She is also someone who I was fortunate enough to have as a contributor to this blog. There was quite a while that she was unable to do very much blogging at all but as you can read from her letter below, she is finding that God has a plan for her and her husband and is leading her to a place where she can find some help for some of her physical problems. This is a great testimony both on how God works and how He leads people to those that can share a seed.  While we still suffer adversity, it is often adversity that is a sign that He is working in our lives. Please include Annie in your prayers and if you would like to learn more about her, her blog Lupus Chronicles is an excellent place to learn her story. I don’t want to violate WordPress’ terms of service so I am not including a link to her online store here, but if you are interested in visiting you can leave a comment here or on her blog and we will send you the link via email. Thanks and God bless!

Letter from Annie:

“I think you may have gathered this from my recent blog posts, but I do believe that the Lord had a plan. About 1/2 year ago, a gal was visiting the Yahoo forum about osteonecrosis that I co-moderate. She found out that I had problems with my ankles, told me of her doctor at Yale in CT and suggested that I contact him (few MDs  are innovative when it comes to treatment of ankle osteonecrosis.) I sent him my films, he said he’d be able to do something, but that Colorado and CT were MILES apart. He suggested instead that I see a colleague of his in Vail, CO. Rey and I went to see the guy in Vail who I thought was very great and I’d trust with my life. Intelligent, personable and EVERYTHING. He felt that he could help, but with my other medical problems, he wasn’t so comfortable with his ”small 35 bed orthopedic hospital.” So he referred me to a fellow who has quite a reputation as a foot/ankle surgeon in Chicago.
Long story (and this has already been long!) short, Rey and I just got back from Chicago and Dr. Haddad can replace my ankle. Unless he has a cancellation, I won”t have surgery until January but, I’ve waited this long. I’ve searched and searched. Dear Lord, guide Dr. Haddad’s hands.  It’s a 4 hour surgery and then, there is NO WEIGHT BEARING FOR SIX WEEKS!! I’ll need to stay in rehab in Chicago for that time, so that means sooo long away from home, but the ability to move around WITHOUT pain is worth it.
I also thought of you as Rey and I took our first step into the study of religion. A good friend’s church had a series of really small Bible studies discussing the book of Mark and I’ve got to say i found it quite enjoyable, Rey much more so. I think you, Rachel, Marianne and others have been placed in my life to teach me that there is another way, a way other than MY WAY. I now feel signs, that I was certain that didn’t exist.
Anywhoo. The past 1 1/2 year, I’ve been taking an internet class which fostered a desire to learn about the web and how to build websites and I’ve learned a lot about WP and a lot me-things I didn’t think would EVER IN A MILLION YEARS interest me.  I’ve opened up my own internet store,  “Your Store for Home Decor”, I sort of need to make a go of my store; this is not just a luxury for the housewife who has nothing better to do. Rey hasn’t worked for nearly 3 years (in December) so we live of my Social Security Income (and you know how ‘generous’ that is, so we’ve pretty much depleted our savings and ‘bankruptcy’ has entered our talks. This is one thing for me to give to the Lord, Loopy, but I also want to ‘share’ it with you. This scares me, but I can’t let it petrify me into inaction. If you can, I’d love for you to say a prayer”

Presidential Proclamation — Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month, 2013

by JohnMcTernan

                          Verse of the Day

Proverbs 16:18 Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.

Proverbs 11:21 Though hand join in hand, the wicked shall not be unpunished: but the seed of the righteous shall be delivered.

The world evangelist for sinThe world evangelist for sin

Obama signed a proclamation declaring June as “Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month”. When I read this proclamation I was shocked to see it was dated May 31, 2013. This was the date of the massive tornado storm that severely damaged Oklahoma and Missouri.

What was stunning in the proclamation was that Obama plans on using America to press the homosexual agenda worldwide! He is going to use America as the springboard for homosexual rights worldwide. America used to send out large numbers of missionaries throughout the world to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ, but now it is sending out government agents of sin. America is now a vector for spreading sin. It is not just people promoting sin, but the government of the United States is doing it. This means that it is creating Ordinances of the Amorites, which brings God’s judgment on the nation. See the end of this article for my teaching about the Ordinances of the Amorites.

For my complete teaching on homosexuality, see Homosexuality vs God’s Holiness.

On the very day Obama was promoting sin in America and the world, the heart of America was being terrorized by ferocious tornado storms. As Obama has taken sin to new level by using the government to promote it worldwide are these storms now the “new normal” to match the level of sin? I use the phrase “new normal” because this was the theme of Oklahoma City, homosexual event the day before the massive tornado storm wrecked havoc in that area.

With so little intercession by the church and virtually ignoring the homosexual agenda, America is left with very little spiritual protection. With all the homosexual activity this June and into September, the nation might be hit with awesome disasters from every angle.

I believe that the tornado storms hitting Oklahoma is God’s way of using nature to awaken His church. It seems the word of God is not enough, so God is trying to shake the church into repentance and crying out to Him for mercy and to send the Holy Spirit for revival. So far, the vast amount of believers are not responding.

12 dead in aftermath of tornadoes, floods 06/01/13 Meteorologists reported this as the greatest tornado outbreak in history. Up to 30 square miles were destroyed along with about 15,000 houses. Is this going to be the new normal for the nation as Obama promotes the homosexual agenda worldwide?

“The death toll has jumped to 12 in the aftermath of a swarm of destructive twisters that tore through the Midwest, killing seven adults and two children in Oklahoma and causing three deaths in Missouri blamed on flooding.

Floodwaters also proved deadly in Oklahoma, where a 4-year-old girl died after she was swept away while taking shelter with her family in a ditch, according to police. It is unclear whether the girl is one of the nine people who died as five tornadoes — one a half-mile wide — struck the Oklahoma City area Friday evening, terrorizing communities already battered by deadly storms this spring.”

Presidential Proclamation — Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month, 201305/31/13 Obama wants America to be the launching pad for homosexual “rights” worldwide! America is now as a sin-diseased nation spreading the sin to the rest of the world. Look at the destruction the day he made this announcement!

“And because LGBT rights are human rights, my Administration is implementing the first-ever Federal strategy to advance equality for LGBT people around the world.

We have a long way to go, but if we continue on this path together, I am confident that one day soon, from coast to coast, all of our young people will look to the future with the same sense of promise and possibility. I am confident because I have seen the talent, passion, and commitment of LGBT advocates and their allies, and I know that when voices are joined in common purpose, they cannot be stopped.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim June 2013 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month. I call upon the people of the United States to eliminate prejudice everywhere it exists, and to celebrate the great diversity of the American people.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this thirty-first day of May, in the year of our Lord two thousand thirteen, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-seventh. BARACK OBAMA

FEMA Opens Disaster Funds to Oklahoma Tornado Victims 05/28/13 America’s judgment from God is going to match the level of sin.

At least 16 dead after rain, twisters lash mid-US; storms head east06/02/13 The meteorologists used the word “terror” to describe the power of this storm. Is this going to be the new normal for tornadoes and other natural disasters?

“Violent storms that left at least 16 people dead in Oklahoma and Missouri were heading towards the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic Sunday, as the nation’s mid-section struggled to cope with floodwaters. At least 13 people –including nine adults, three of who were storm chasers, and four children — were killed after five tornadoes — one a half-mile wide — struck the Oklahoma City area Friday evening, terrorizing communities already battered by deadly storms this spring.”

The Ordinances of the Amorites

The Ordinances of the Amorites

Genesis 15:16 But in the fourth generation they shall come hither again:

for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full.

God told Abraham that his descendants were going to leave the land of Canaan for 400 years because the iniquity of the people living in the land was not complete. There is a process for a society to be taken over by iniquity. In the case of the Canaanites, God gave these people 400 years to stop iniquity. God knew that after 400 years the iniquity of the people would reach its peak. The people would not turn from sin, but they would completely embrace it.

When studying Genesis 15:16 there is a key word in this verse. It is the Hebrew word translated full. This word is directly connected with the idea of friendly or friendship. The concept of this word is that when a society is friendly with iniquity at that point it is subject to judgment from God. Iniquity is no longer shameful or disgraceful. It is not hidden or done in the dark. The people are “friendly” with it. They are accustomed to it. In Genesis 15:16, the Bible does not define iniquity: it simply states that there is a time for it to mature in a society and become full.

After the 400 years, the Jews left Egypt and came back to the land of Canaan . Today it is called the land of Israel . At this time, the Bible identifies what is iniquity. In Leviticus 18, God warned the Jews not to follow the ordinances of the Canaanites who lived in the land. The Canaanites and Amorites blended into one people; therefore it is also the ordinances of the Amorites that are mentioned in Genesis 15:16.

Leviticus 18:3 After the doings of the land of Egypt , wherein ye dwelt, shall ye not do: and after the doings of the land of Canaan , whither I bring you, shall ye not do: neither shall ye walk in their ordinances.

In the above verse, the key word is “ordinances”. This Hebrew word means an enactment and is also translated custom, manner, and statute. By using the word ordinance the Bible is describing a society that is “friendly” with iniquity. Iniquity has become ingrained in the Canaanites, by both customs and laws, which makes it a way of life. For this reason, God is about to judge the Canaanites and drive them off the land. The judgment comes because iniquity is made an ordinance of the society and not because individuals are committing iniquity. When a society makes iniquity an ordinance, this is extremely serious with God.

Later in chapter 18, the Bible defines iniquity. It includes such acts as: adultery, child sacrifice, homosexuality and bestiality. Homosexuality is singled out from this group and described as an abomination. Without any doubt, God strongly condemns the homosexual act as iniquity. There is no section in the Old Testament where God approves or condones homosexuality. The homosexual act is a very serious offense to God. It is linked with child sacrifice and bestiality. The Scriptures to show this follow:

Leviticus 18:20 Moreover thou shalt not lie carnally with thy neighbour’s wife, to defile thyself with her. (Adultery)

(21) And thou shalt not let any of thy seed pass through the fire to Molech, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am the LORD. (Child sacrifice)

(22) Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination. (Homosexuality)

(23) Neither shalt thou lie with any beast to defile thyself therewith: neither shall any woman stand before a beast to lie down thereto: it is confusion. (Bestiality)

The Bible warns that when homosexuality becomes an ordinance, social custom or norm, it will bring God’s judgment on that nation. When the Bible defines iniquity, the homosexual act would automatically fall under the description of this word. In the strongest language possible, the Bible says because of iniquity the land will vomit out its inhabitants. The Scriptures to show this follows:

Leviticus 18:24 Defile not ye yourselves in any of these things: for in all these the nations are defiled which I cast out before you:

(25) And the land is defiled: therefore I do visit the iniquity thereof upon it, and the land itself vomiteth out her inhabitants.

(26) Ye shall therefore keep my statutes and my judgments, and shall not commit any of these abominations; neither any of your own nation, nor any stranger that sojourneth among you:

(27) (For all these abominations have the men of the land done, which were before you, and the land is defiled;)

The United States now is enacting, by both custom and law, the Ordinances of the Amorites; therefore the nation is defiled before the holy God of Israel and faces His judgment. By promoting homosexuality, America has become like the ancient pagan Amorites and has now come under the judgment of God.

America promotes homosexuality by custom with events such as Gay Pride Day, Gay Awareness Month (June), Gay days at Disney land, Gay Day at sporting events and events like Southern Decadence in New Orleans . There are gay clubs in high schools and colleges. The political parties are pandering to the homosexuals for their votes. By custom, homosexuality has woven into the fabric of America .

America is continually making ordinances to advance the homosexual agenda. Sodomites can legally marry in California and Massachusetts while many states recognize civil unions. Homosexuals are now able to adopt children and gain custody of children during a divorce. There are now numerous hate speech laws which are being used to silence opposition to the homosexual agenda. America is a long way down the road to enacting all the Ordinances of the Amorites.

The Bible warns of God judging a nation that walks in these ordinances. When the corporate attitude of a nation is friendly toward homosexuality, then at this point the iniquity is full. It is apparent “the cup” of America’s sin is rapidly filling up. Americans hardly blush anymore at fornication and adultery. The nation kills over one million babies a year with over 50 million killed since 1973. The legalizing of abortion was an additional Ordinance of the Amorites. Homosexuality is fast becoming “a Constitutional right”. The only ordinance left to fulfill Leviticus 18 is bestiality. This is probably next on line to become an ordinance!

Revelation 22:20 He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.

Clara Barton and the American Red Cross via American Minute

The American Red Crosswas organized MAY 21, 1881, by a schoolteacher namedClara Barton. The first woman to be a clerk at the U.S. Patent Office,Clara Barton moved to Washington at the outbreak of the Civil War.

She distributed relief supplies to wounded soldiers and, at the request of President Lincoln, aided for nearly four years in searching for missing soldiers.

After attempting to carry a wounded soldier off the battlefield of Antietam, September 17, 1862, Clara Barton wrote:

“A ball had passed between my body and the right arm which supported him, cutting through the sleeve and passing through his chest from shoulder to shoulder. There was no more to be done for him and I left him to his rest.

I have never mended that hole in my sleeve. I wonder if a soldier ever does mend a bullet hole in his coat?”

Clara Barton was present at some of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War: Cedar Mountain, Second Manassas, Antietam, and Fredericksburg.

The National Park Service recorded thatClara Barton first visited Chatham or “Lacy House” in early August 1862, bringing food and hospital supplies to help “her boys.”

She returned during the Fredericksburg Campaign, December 1862.

Clara Barton helped care for the wounded soldiers of both sides that were brought into the house.

A physician requested her help in the city, which required her to cross a pontoon bridge over the river.

As she stepped off, an officer offered her his hand.

Suddenly a shell passed under their arms, tearing away part of her skirt and his coattail. He later died.

Clara Barton set up a soup kitchen at the Lacy House, which became a makeshift hospital for the Union 2nd Corps.

With doctors too busy to keep medical records,Clara wrote in her diary the names of the men who died and where they were buried. Her diary is at the Clara BartonNational Historic Site in Maryland.

On December 13, 1862, the day of the heaviest fighting,Clara was in the doorway of the Lacy House when an exploding shell severed a soldier’s artery. She applied the tourniquet that saved his life.

Crossing the river again, a Union provost marshall thought she was a civilian and volunteered to escort her to safety, but looking at the thousands of Union soldiers, she politely declined the offer saying she was the best protected woman in the world.

When a shell struck the door of the room she was in, ‘she did not flinch, but continued her duties’ assisting the doctors.

The next two weeks at Chatham, Clara saw ‘hundreds of the worst wounded men I have ever seen,’ occupying every room of the house.

They ‘covered every foot of the floors and porticos’ and stair landings. A man ‘thought himself rich’ if he laid under a table where he would not be stepped on.

Clara saw five men stuffed onto four shelves of a cupboard. Others shivered in the cold muddy yard on blankets, waiting for someone inside to die so they could be brought in.

Clara set up a soup kitchen in a tent in the yard to help them.

The Library of Congress has the letter Clara Barton wrote to her cousin from the Head Quarters of the 2nd Division, 9th Army Corps-Army of the Potomac Camp near Falmouth, Virginia, December 12th, 1862, 2 o’clock a.m.:

“My dear Cousin Vira: Five minutes time with you; and God only knows what those five minutes might be worth to the many-doomed thousands sleeping around me. It is the night before a battle.

The enemy, Fredericksburg, and its mighty entrenchments lie before us, the river between – at tomorrow’s dawn our troops will assay to cross, and the guns of the enemy will sweep those frail bridges at every breath. The moon is shining through the soft haze with a brightness almost prophetic.

For the last half hour I have stood alone in the awful stillness of its glimmering light gazing upon the strange sad scene around me striving to say, ‘Thy will Oh God be done.’

The camp fires blaze with unwanted brightness, the sentry’s tread is still but quick – the acres of little shelter tents are dark and still as death, no wonder for us as I gazed sorrowfully upon them.

I thought I could almost hear the slow flap of the grim messenger’s wings, as one by one he sought and selected his victims for the morning sacrifice. Sleep weary one, sleep and rest for tomorrow’s toil. Oh! Sleep and visit in dreams once more the loved ones nestling at home…”

Clara Bartoncontinued:

“They may yet live to dream of you, cold lifeless and bloody, but this dream, soldier, is thy last, paint it brightly, dream it well.

Oh northern mothers, wives and sisters, all unconscious of the hour, would to Heaven that I could bear for you the concentrated woe which is so soon to follow, would that Christ would teach my soul a prayer that would plead to the Father for grace sufficient for you. God pity and strengthen you every one.

Mine are not the only waking hours, the light yet burns brightly in our kind hearted General’s tent where he pens what may be a last farewell to his wife and children and thinks sadly of his fated men.

Already the roll of the moving artillery is sounded in my ears. The battle draws near and I must catch one hour’s sleep for tomorrow’s labor.

Good night, dear cousin, and Heaven grant you strength for your more peaceful and less terrible, but not less weary days than mine. Yours in love, Clara.”

Clara Barton wrote of the soldiers:

“What could I do but go with them, or work for them and my country? The patriot blood of my father was warm in my veins.”

Clara Barton then went to Europe during the Franco-German War, where she worked with Henri Dunant, founder of theInternational Red Cross.

Henri Dunant was the first recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.

Henri Dunant founded the Geneva chapter of the YMCA (Young Men’s Christian Association) and proposed Jews repopulate Palestine, being one of the few non-Jews to attend the First Zionist Congress in Basel, 1897.

Theodore Herzl first used the term, “Christian Zionist” in reference to Henri Dunant.

Inspired by Henri Dunant’s International Red Cross, Clara Barton established theAmerican Red Cross Society, MAY 21, 1881, serving as its head until 1904.

Clara Barton stated:

“An institution or reform movement that is not selfish, must originate in the recognition of some evil that is adding to the sum of human suffering, or diminishing the sum of happiness.

I may be compelled to face danger, but never fear it, and while our soldiers can stand and fight, I can stand and feed and nurse them. I am well and strong and young – young enough to go to the front. If I cannot be a soldier, I’ll help soldiers.”

Clara Bartonhelped in hospitals in Cuba during the Spanish-American War.

She wrote:

“In time of peace we must prepare for war, and it is no less a wise benevolence that makes preparation in the hour of peace for assuaging the ills that are sure to accompany war.”

President William McKinley stated regardingClara Barton in his Second Annual Message, December 5, 1898:

“It is a pleasure for me to mention in terms of cordial appreciation the timely and useful work of theAmerican National Red Cross, both in relief measures preparatory to the campaigns, in sanitary assistance at several of the camps of assemblage, and later, under the able and experienced leadership of the president of the society, Miss Clara Barton, on the fields of battle and in the hospitals at the front in Cuba.

Working in conjunction with the governmental authorities and under their sanction and approval, and with the enthusiastic cooperation of many patriotic women and societies in the various States, the Red Cross has fully maintained its already high reputation for intense earnestness and ability to exercise the noble purposes of its international organization, thus justifying the confidence and support which it has received at the hands of the American people.”

President McKinley continued:

“To the members and officers of this society and all who aided them in their philanthropic work the sincere and lasting gratitude of the soldiers and the public is due and is freely accorded.

In tracing these events we are constantly reminded of our obligations to the Divine Master for His watchful care over us and His safe guidance, for which the nation makes reverent acknowledgment and offers humble prayer for the continuance of His favor.”

President Woodrow Wilson mentioned the Red Cross in his Proclamation of a Contribution Day for the aid of stricken Jewish people, January 11, 1916:

“Whereas in the various countries now engaged in war there are nine millions of Jews, the great majority of whom are destitute of food, shelter, and clothing; and…have been driven from their homes without warning, deprived of an opportunity to make provision for their most elementary wants, causing starvation, disease and untold suffering; and

Whereas the people of the United States of America have learned with sorrow of this terrible plight of millions of human beings and have most generously responded to the cry for help…

Now, Therefore, I, Woodrow Wilson, President of the United States…do appoint and proclaim January 27, 1916, as a day upon which the people of the United States may make such contributions as they feel disposed for the aid of the stricken Jewish people.

Contributions may be addressed to the American Red Cross, Washington, D.C., which will care for their proper distribution.”

Opening the Second Red Cross Drive in New York City, President Woodrow Wilson stated, May 18, 1918:

“Being members of the American Red Cross…a great fraternity and fellowship which extends all over the world…this cross which these ladies bore here today is an emblem of Christianity itself…

When you think of this, you realize how the people of the United States are being drawn together into a great intimate family whose heart is being used for the service of the soldiers not only, but for the long night of suffering and terror, in order that they and men everywhere may see the dawn of a day of righteousness and justice and peace.”

On December 8, 1918, in an appeal of support for theAmerican Red Cross just a month after the fighting in World War I had ceased, President Woodrow Wilson stated:

“One year ago, twenty-two million Americans, by enrolling as members of theRed Cross at Christmas time, sent to the men who were fighting our battles overseas a stimulating message of cheer and good-will…

Now, by God’s grace, the Red Cross Christmas message of 1918 is to be a message of peace as well as a message of good-will.”

On May 1, 1940, President Franklin D. Roosevelt greeted the chairman of theAmerican National Red Cross, Norman H. Davis, in Washington, D.C.:

“The greatInternational Red Cross organization, founded 76 years ago to bring mercy to the battlefield…

I am confident that whatever may be the problems which intensification of warfare may bring, the American people will respond to any appeal for funds when the Red Crossdeems it necessary to call upon them for additional aid.

By such response we can aid in sustaining the spirit and morale of those in distress abroad until the happy day we all pray for, when hostilities shall cease.”
