King James Version (KJV)
1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.
5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
Light!!! Did you ever consider the meaning of light and how it is used in the Bible? There are three different ways you can use light in the English language, as a noun, a verb and an adjective.
Definition of Light
noun:1) the natural agent that stimulates sight and makes things visible.
2) understanding of a problem or mystery; enlightenment.
verb: 1) provide with light or lighting; illuminate.
2) make (something) start burning; ignite.
adjective: 1) having a considerable or sufficient amount of natural light; not dark.
2) (of a color) pale.
Even with the definition you can break it down even further to types of light from natural to man-made, from terrestrial to celestial. Here are just a few:
Sun (sunlight, solar radiation)
Sunset & sunrise
Diffuse sky radiation
Starlight (Stars forming groups such as star clusters and galaxies and indirectly lighting nebulae)
Bright star (list)
Deep sky objects including quasars, accretion discs around black holes, blazars, magnetars, misc. nebulae, pulsars
Supernova / nova / hypernova
Atmospheric entry (via ionization and/or heating; can be man-made, also)
Lightning (Plasma (physics))
A large list I know, but this is just a portion of the different types of light! Amazing isn’t it? I didn’t even begin with the different uses of light! In the King James Version of the Bible light is mentioned 272 times. The first time is in the very first chapter of Genesis and in the third verse where God says “let there be light!”
God said that light was good! And divided it from darkness. He gave us the light of the sun, put the stars in the heavens, and gave us the moon for when the night brought darkness to the face of the earth. He gave us all the materials we needed to make our own light and we have covered the world with it to the point that when you look at it from space, you can easily see where the people are concentrated.
God Himself is our light: 2 Samuel 22:29 For thou art my lamp, O Lord: and the Lord will lighten my darkness.
Psalm 27:1 The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
Psalm 119:105 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
Even the stars praise Him with their light:
Psalm 148:3 Praise ye him, sun and moon: praise him, all ye stars of light.
We can have light in us:
Matthew 6:22 The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.
He has promised our burden to be light:
Matthew 11:30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
God sent a certain man to introduce the true Light of the world:
John 1:6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.
8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.
9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.
10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.
11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
15 John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.
16 And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.
Those that do evil, hate the light:
John 3:20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
Jesus is the light of the world and if we follow Him we have the promise of life:
John 8:12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the lightof life.
John 9:5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.
John 12:36 While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them.
John 12:46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.
We are instructed to cast off the works of darkness and put on the armour of light:
Romans 13:12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.
God is light and in Him there is no darkness:
1 John 1:5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
Someday soon our reward will be here if we accept Jesus as our Savior and the light of our world:
Revelation 21:23-25 King James Version (KJV)
23 And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.
24 And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it.
25 And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there.
God bless you and I hope that you found this small work of light, enlightening!
