Attempting to obey God and follow Jesus Christ our Lord

Thy Neighbor

There are many instructions in the Bible on how we are to treat our neighbours, and many people center on “Love thy neighbour as thyself.” And this is indeed part of our instruction on living. But this is not what gets us into heaven. In Matthew 19 when the rich young man asked Jesus “What lack I yet?”, Jesus gave him further instructions: “21 Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.”

The young man in this instance was not willing to give up everything and follow Jesus and therefore lost out. How much are we willing to give up in order to do the same? Do we make the assumption that once we have believed Jesus requires nothing more? He told the woman about to be stoned to “go, and sin no more.” John 8:11

He knows that we are not perfect, but He still has an expectation that we appreciate the sacrifice He has given. Because it can only be given once:

Hebrews 10:26

For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth nomore sacrifice for sins,
When we accept Jesus as our Savior, all sin is forgiven:
Hebrews 10:17

and their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.
But we do have further instructions, we are not yet perfect, that we will have when He returns! But we can not sit on our laurels and pretend nothing more is required. How sad would that be to think that Jesus gave His all simply that we could claim the promise of salvation without any effort on our part. Not that our efforts any way gain us entrance into heaven. But once we are saved, we must strive to “go forth and sin no more” and a good part of that is in how we treat our neighbour and our enemies. Love is more than not doing anything against them or offending them in any way. Like the children of God that we are, we have been warned of many things. Love is passing those instructions on to everyone. If we do not share, we do not love.
We hear the phrase so often today of “driving off the cliff”, the simple truth is most of us do not bother warning anyone that the cliff is even there because we are afraid that we will offend them. How can they avoid it if we don’t tell them it is there. If we consider the whole of man as our neighbour, and treat them as such, we will accomplish what we are told to do, and that is to teach His word throughout the world. Until He comes

Leviticus 19:15-18

Authorized (King James) Version (AKJV)

15 Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judgment: thou shalt not respect the person of the poor, nor honour the person of the mighty: but in righteousness shalt thou judge thy neighbour.

16 Thou shalt not go up and down as a talebearer among thy people: neither shalt thou stand against the blood of thy neighbour: I am the Lord.

17 Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thine heart: thou shalt in any wise rebuke thy neighbour, and not suffer sin upon him.

18 Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the Lord.

Exodus 20

Authorized (King James) Version (AKJV)

16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

Exodus 21:14

But if a man come presumptuously upon his neighbour, to slay him with guile; thou shalt take him from mine altar, that he may die.
Psalm 79:12

and render unto our neighbours sevenfold into their bosom their reproach, wherewith they have reproached thee, O Lord.

Matthew 5:42-44

Authorized (King James) Version (AKJV)

42 Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.

43 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. 44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

Matthew 19:18-23

Authorized (King James) Version (AKJV)

18 He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, 19 Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 20 The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet?

17 Thou shalt not covet thy house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.

21 Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me. 22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.

23 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven.
