Attempting to obey God and follow Jesus Christ our Lord

You Have a Name that You are Alive, but You are Dead

Paul's third journey

This is what the Spirit instructed John to write to the church in Sardis:

And to the angel of the church in Sardis write, ‘These things says He who has the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars: “I know your works, that you have a name that you are alive, but you are dead. Rev. 3:1 KJV

But Sardis was just one of the churches that John was instructed to write to, he also wrote to Laodicea, Thyatira, Pergamos, Ephesus, Smyrna, and Philadelphia. In his letter to Ephesus, Pergamos, Thyatira, Sardis, and Laodicea he warns them of their shortcomings and tells them to repent. Were these churches aware of their shortcomings at the time? Did they think that they were doing the Lords will in all their works?

Matthew 13:33 Another parable spake he unto them; The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.

Luke 13:20-21 And again he said, Whereunto shall I liken the kingdom of God? It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.

How many churches of today has the leaven been hidden in? How many of us are not even aware that our own church is being corrupted from within? Because that something that is hidden means something that is not supposed to be there doesn’t it? “The woman hid the leaven in the meal till the whole was leavened.” If it had been good, it would not have be necessary to hide it, would it?

Luke 12:1

King James Version (KJV)

12 In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.

1 Corinthians 5

King James Version (KJV)

6 Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?

7 Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:

8 Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

From Let Us Reason, I found this that is a very good description:

“The woman in the parable represents the Church. She did something God prohibits; she hid the leaven in the meal, that which is good is affected. She mingled a foreign ingredient into the body. Leaven in this case is false teaching. This is speaking of a corrupting influence that would infiltrate all parts of the Church body. It is sin and evil (not the gospel) that tends to permeate the entire church body as time goes on, as it will also increase in the world it will have an increase in the church.”

Pastor was teaching last night on Revelation 2:4 “Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love.” We are so many of us faithful, attending church, taking part in the activities, doing what we think if required, but have we left our first love? Do we think that we have done what we needed to do and therefore nothing is required of us?

The churches that the Lord had John write letters to were baptized in the Holy Spirit, they were the very first churches established. If fault could and was found fault in them, we must constantly evaluate our own churches. We still have time to repent and change. But we can only do so if we look with honesty at what we are and ask God to forgive us. I would hate to be one of the churches that the Spirit looks as and says:

“So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spew you out of My mouth” Rev. 3:16

Nor would I want my church to be like any of the other churches that were found to come short. We must examine ourselves and take heed of the instruction:

“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” Rev. 3:22
